Spring is such an exciting time to get to know your feathered neighbors!
I’m offering a small number of private bird walks and backyard bird discovery sessions for anyone who would like help learning the birds around their home, neighborhood, or local parks.
These are not typical bird walks where I simply point out birds and tell you their names. Instead, I guide you through a simple 5-step process so you have the skills you need to step outside and know which birds you’re seeing and hearing — wherever you go.
The five steps:
Step 1: How to choose and use binoculars so they actually work (one of my recent clients had been using hers incorrectly for 25 years!)
Step 2: The five essential things to look for when identifying birds
Step 3: How to use field guides in a way that is effective and enjoyable
Step 4: Three tips to begin recognizing birds by ear
Step 5: How to see more birds by blending into the landscape (through your movement, attention, presence, and more)
What the sessions are like
Relaxed 1-hour sessions
Customized and personal to you
Beginner-friendly
Slow-paced, with a lot of space for questions
Interactive, experiential, fun
At a time that works for your schedule
What my clients tell me most is how quickly things start to "click", and how much fun it is to discover birds this way. Many come back surprised at how delighted they feel being outside again, really seeing and listening. They also report feeling more peaceful and grounded.

A poem for your enjoyment...
Bird in the Pepper Tree, by Mary Oliver
Don't mind my inexplicable delight in knowing your name, little Wilson's Warbler yellow as a lemon, with a smooth, black cap.
Just do what you do and don't worry, dipping branch by branch down to the fountain to sip neatly, then flutter away.
